The MCE-17B motor can be used with all Bolex H camera
- Remove the winding crank
- Push the spring motor disengaging lever down to
"0." If any resistance is felt towards the end of
this movement, do not attempt to force it but press
the front release knob while continuing to move the
- Fit the plexiglass adapter over the speed
control knob; this will make the latter easier to
use when the motor is in position.
- Fit the flexible driving shaft of the motor
on to the hand cranking spindle of the camera, making
sure the pin engages in the corresponding notch of the
shaft. Attach the motor to the camera by screwing the
upper milled knob in the position usually occupied by
the winding crank. Then screw the lower milled knob
into the threaded hole provided on all recent H camera
models, first removing the small screw covering the
hole. The screw should be replaced when the motor is
not in use.
- On cameras not equipped with this threaded hole,
the lower milled knob cannot be used and should be
removed from the motor after loosening the holding
The MCE-17B motor can be powered by standard 6V, 3.5
amp-hour batteries, available from radio stores and
Paillard-Bolex dealers, or with any direct current supply
at the same voltage, such as an accumulator.
A leather case containing five 6v. 3.5 amp-hour
batteries connected to a terminal plate is sold
separately. Designed to be carried over the shoulder,
this allows complete freedom of movement and is ideal for
filming out-of-doors. It also includes a compartment for
the motor and the lead.
- Set the camera speed to the desired
- Move the starting lever at the base of the motor
to the "off" position by pulling it outwards
- Connect the power lead to the motor and to the
terminal plate, placing the red plug in the socket
marked "0" and the other plug in the socket
corresponding to the selected speed. The conductor
fitted with an eye is used for connecting the power
lead to the terminal plate.
- Attention. To remove the power lead, push
the small metal lock located beneath the 3 pole socket
to the right.
All five batteries will not be used up and need
replacing at the same time since some of them are only
used occasionally, depending on the filming speed

- To replace batteries, open the case and push back
both sides to release the terminal plate, then turn
this over on to the lid.
- Disconnect the discharged batteries and replace
them, taking care to position the + and - poles
correctly. Follow the diagram on the back of the

connecting the wire from terminal 12 with the
corresponding batteries, then succesively connect
those from terminals 18, 24, 30 and 0. These figures
represent the nominal voltages obtained at each of the
24v. power socket (f) for the MM motor (code CASMO)
of the 400 ft. magazine (code CASFA).
The MM motor can only be used if the MCE-17B electric
motor is powered by a set of 6 or 8 batteries and used in
conjunction with the BXE-70A voltage regulator (code
The camera can now be started directly from the
electric motor, or by means of a remote control cable or
the "Electric H" grip (code HAFEL).

Push the side release to "M". Depending on the
position of the motor release lever, the motor will drive
the camera in intermittent or continuous running.
For intermittent running: pull the lever out.
The motor will run so long as the lever is pressed
forward and will stop when the lever is released.
For continuous running: push the lever fully
home in the motor body.
In reverse: If you should want to change to
another type of film when the 100 ft. spool in the camera
is not yet fully exposed, there is no need to remove the
motor and rewind the film with the hand crank. Instead,
note the number shown on the camera counter, then
simultaneously press the lever and the grey reverse
running knob, marked "R".
Release by remote
A 2 ft. remote control cable, equipped with a toggle
switch, is supplied with the motor. This is identical to
the cable supplied with the MST motor. If the camera is
used with the HAFEL grip, its cable should be plugged
into the remote control socket.
If a longer remote control cable is required, this can
easily be made but care should be taken to ensure that
the wire gauge is large enough to prevent a drop

home to start the motor. The camera is released as usual
with front or cable release. Single frame exposures
should not be made as the exposure time may be different
from motor to motor. When the camera is stopped, do not
let the motor run more than 1 minute in order to avoid
premature wear of the motor friction.
Mounted in ball bearings, the motor requires no
