Introduction
With the Double Super-8 Magazine attached, full
display of the Elmo Zoom C-300 performance is realized.
This magazine is:
- Revolutionary. When attached to the main body of
the Elmo Zoom C-300, it allows continuous shooting of
30-meter (100 feet) Double Super-8 film.
- Convenient. Once the first side of Double Super-8
film has been shot, the camera automatically stops and
film change is made simply by turning the magazine
upside down without reloading the film.
- Versatile. Filming techniques such as reversing
and overlapping are possible.
Double Super-8
Film
- Double Super-8 film has a width of 16 mm., twice that
of Super-8 film (8 mm.).
- Simultaneous shooting on both sides of the film is
not possible. Shooting time per side of 30 m (100 feet)
film is six minutes and 40 seconds (18 frames per
second). Thus, continuous shooting time for both sides
totals 13 minutes and 20 seconds.
- Films returned from the processing laboratory after
being developed is in the form of film 60 meters in
length (200 feet).
Specifications

ASA Number: 10, 20, 25, 40, 50, 100, 160, 250, 320.

Weight: Magazine 1.3 kg. When attached to C-300 camera
body, 2.5 kg.
Power source: Four UM-3 dry cells. Four additional
batteries are necessary for C-300 camera body. As
accessory, external power source connector is
available.
Remote Control: Possible
Changing the
Finder
Before attaching the Double Super-8 Magazine to
the body of the camera, change the finder.
Remove the finder, fixed to the camera body, by
turning to the left and install the special finder as
illustrated in the photograph.
Changing the
Carrying Strap
 
Remove the carrying strap from the camera body,
and attach the special carrying strap in its place.
- Insert the strap into the fitting on the
front
- Insert the retaining pin into the fitting at the
back and screw it into the hole on the opposite
side.
Inserting
Batteries
First, insert the UM-3 dry cells and the mercury
cell into the body of the C-300.
Install the four UM-3 dry cells into the magazine in
the following manner.
Press the battery cover buttons and pull the cover in
the direction of the arrow to open.
Insert the four dry cells into the case in accordance
with (+) and (-) marks.
Cell Life
New UM-3 dry cells can be used to shoot
approximately two rolls of 30 meter (100 ft.) film. When
two rolls have been shot, all eight dry cells (four in
the camera body, and four in the magazine) should be
changed.
The M-position (for indicating voltage of dry cells
which drive the motor) of the battery test switch cannot
be used when a Double Super-8 Magazine is loaded in the
camera, since meter deflection is excessive.
Mercury cell life can be checked by the battery
meter.
When the battery test button is pushed on the M side,
the magazine take-up spindle rotates, but this is not a
trouble of the camera.
Film
Loading
1. Raise the side cover release knob and turn it
to the left to open the side cover.
2. Open the pressure plate by pushing it in the
direction of the arrow.
3. As shown in the photograph, turn the retainer
knob on the Elmo take-up spool (at the lower spindle) to
either the left or right and remove the spool.
4. Be sure not to loosen the unexposed roll of
film and draw out about 40 centimeters (16 inches) of
film, place it on the upper spool spindle, and fasten it
in place with the retaining knob; slip the film into the
sprocket shoe and onto the sprocket, load the film along
the white line around the loop setter and insert it.
If more film than necessary has been drawn out, film
may be completely taken up (wound off one reel) after
shooting the first side. Under such conditions, it is
impossible to shoot on the second side of the
magazine.
Therefore, if the film should be completely taken-up
by the Elmo take-up spool on the side "1", replace the
spool containing film (Elmo take-up spool) to the other
spindle and thread the film manually again. Reloading
should be done in subdued light. Then start shooting the
second half of the film in the same manner as a new film
is loaded.
In this case the footage counter starts at "0" instead
of "100".
5. Insert the film by slipping it into the film
gate and close the pressure plate.
And load the film through the lower loop setter and
the sprocket.
6. Press the sprocket and pull the film to
insure that perforations (film transporting holes) and
sprocket teeth are properly engaged. If the sprocket
moves when the film is pulled, it proves the sprocket
teeth and the film perforations are engaged.
7. Wind the film 2-3 turns onto the Elmo take-up
spool then place the spool to the lower spool spindle and
fasten it by turning the retaining knob.
8. Refer to the figure for the proper method of
film loading. Check the following:
- Proper engagement of film perforations and
sprocket (photograph 6)
- Proper placement of film into the film gate
(photograph 5)
- When the film comes off the sprocket, open the
hollow of the sprocket shoe with the finger.
Replace the side cover after properly loading the
film.
Magazine
Installation
Turn side "1" of the Double Super-8 Magazine
toward you, and attach it to the camera body. At this
time, the figure "1" on the spool appears at the film
indicating window on the camera body.
Insert the magazine into the camera body until
it does not go far and pushing the magazine lightly to
the camera body, turn the lock in the L direction.
Turn the ASA dial and set the value according to
the ASA number of loaded film.
When attaching the magazine to the camera body,
confirm the following:
- Whether the FR dial on the C-300 camera body is
set to F. If it is set to R and the camera is
operated, the footage counter may be damaged.
- Whether black figures appear on the footage
counter of the magazine. If red figures appear, the
motor will not operate for side "1" even when the
shutter button is pressed. See Side "1"
and "2" Changeover Pin.
When shooting with Kodackrome
[sic] II type A (ASA 40 for night use with
tungsten lamp light) for outdoor daylight shooting,
attach the Elmo 85 filter to the front of the lens. On
this occasion, set the ASA dial at the orange coloured
(A). When shooting with artificial illumination, the 85
filter is not necessary. Set the ASA dial at 40.
Threading
Test
Before shooting, press the shutter button and
run the film until the footage counter shows "0". When
the film is loaded, it shows "S". When running the film,
checks must be conducted to make certain film is being
transported properly. An inspection window is located on
the magazine for this purpose. The inspection window can
be opened by sliding the sliding cover in the direction
of the arrow and by turning the enclosed inspection
window cover release knob.
Open the window and inspect. Points to be checked
are:
- Whether or not the film loop is intact, still
maintained as it was initially set.
- Whether or not the film advance is as it should
be: smooth and unobstructed.
- Whether or not any abnormal noises occur during
film transport
If the loop is not properly maintained, correct
by turning the loop setter knob in the direction of the
arrow while transporting the film.
If the film is not being properly transported, even
after repeating this action, remove the magazine and
again check whether or not the film has been loaded
correctly.
Film
Counter
 
The film counter consists of frame counter and
footage counter.
The dial of the frame counter moves one gradation per
two frames and one rotation of the dial is equivalent to
exactly one foot (72 frames) of film. The zero point of
the frame counter can be set by turning the outer
ring.
When Shooting of the
First Side is Completed
 
When shooting of the first side is completed,
the motor stops automatically and the black figure 100
changes to the red figure 100 on the footage counter.
Turn the lock knob to the 0 direction and detach the
magazine from the camera body.
Then, turn the magazine upside down and reattach it to
the camera body. The film indicating window should show
the figure 2 at this time. To check proper film transport
before starting to shoot, remove the finder and repeat
the procedure outlined in Threading
Test.
Shooting is completed when the footage counter shows a
reading of 200. Run the film until the motor comes to an
automatic stop.
Remove the film together with the spool and forward it
to be developed in accordance with instructions given
with the film.
After sending the film to the laboratory, the empty
Elmo spool should remain in the magazine.
Side "1" and "2"
Changeover Pin
 
The side "1" and "2" changeover pin appears,
when the sliding cover is slided. When switching this pin
to "1", black colored figure appears in the footage
counter. When switching this pin to "2", red colored
figure appears. If the color of the figure in the footage
counter and that of the film indicating window are
different, the camera does not run even though shutter
button is pushed. The cases when it is necessary to
operate the Side "1" and "2" changeover pin are as
follows:
- When the footage counter is showing red colored
figure even though a new roll of film is loaded.
- When testing the threading with the attached test
film. The length of the test film is about 6 m. (120
ft.) Test threading should be stopped before the
footage counter shows 20 on the first side. And detach
the magazine, change over this pin to "2", turn the
magazine upside down and re-attach it to the camera
body. Then test the threading of the remaining half
side "2"
- When the camera runs without a film, the camera
automatically stops after 100 ft. running. But, if the
magazine is detached and re-attached by turning it
upside down before the camera stops automatically on
the side "1", then change this pin to "2"
- CAUTION: While photographing, do not operate the
Side "1" and "2" changeover pin.
